Is it possible to force a URL action to open in the same window on Tableau Server ?

Hello everyone, 11782 VIEWS — — hopefully this helps everyone!
Here to say it is possible, this is a limitation workaround, and there is a known negative impact to Tableau Server performance, I leave it up to you to test this from a Tableau Desktop & Tableau Server performance perspective, before implementing/publishing, to end users! If you’re not the Tableau Server Admin — please let them know what your viz is doing and any negative impacts it could have on the Tableau Server environment.

Don’t make this your hammer solution without testing it , just throw this in the toolbox and consider the possibilities. Given the above ‘more than likely not supported workflow’ & negative impact to Tableau Server… I would not recommend opening a support case if this blows up your environment. Consider yourself prepared and warned.. Try to test it during a slow concurrency hour/day — Ask your Tableau Server admin when’s the best time.
This is a bit outside of the box but a potential possibility, given you can’t publish a workbook w/ appended URL functions… (would be cool if you could considering all things possible).
First generate the beginning stages
1. Generate workbook
2. Open Super Store data
3. Drag and drop number of records on text
3. Generate new dashboard
4. Drag and drop your number of records viz on the dashboard
5. Add URL action (my example used www.google.com)
6. Publish the dashboard to your Tableau Server
After you publish your dashboard that you want to self open something on…
1. Drag and drop a

2. Copy and paste previous Tableau Server URL
3. Add the below logic to it
EX: …./views/TEST/Dashboard3?:embed=y&:linktarget=_self
— — Jedi Trickz — This can also be a new workbook, with ONLY that WEB PAGE on 1 dashboard. It could help to make it a lean workbook.

This doesn’t state it’s possible with desktop or not with desktop. I’ve been told by a Tableau Lead Support Tech, that it would open two vizql processes in Tableau Server. Because of the negative impact at the time, I didn’t test it…
Good news though — It appears to work w/ the above method
- In an isolated test listed above on my laptop
- Tested the functionality on Tableau v9.2.1
- Only tested in Tableau Desktop — I currently only have access to live TableauServer International PROD environments and this is a peak hour. Won’t be able to test this on Tableau Server until the weekend.
Note: I didn’t appreciate how challenging it was to click on the URL Action MENU pop up on the tooltip.. But after a few tries I got it it to work, any C-level end user would have sent it back and said fix it… Probably a good note that this should be avoided & just use SELECT vs Menu? Could be an isolated use case. Do you have any similar issues?
To my knowledge I’ve never heard of anyone doing this.. Which could mean it’s not right . So, does this work for you? Feel free to ask any more questions regarding implementation here.
